What The Press Says

Learning the empowering art of burlesque

by Carter Haydu
Times-Herald - March 6, 2011

What's wrong with sexy?

Absolutely nothing in the opinion of 26-year-old Jocelynne Adams, who honed the art of strutting her stuff with six fellow participants in a burlesque workshop at Hair Expressions Ladies Fitness Centre on Saturday.

"I think it's a really wonderful thing for women to come into an open and safe place and explore things for themselves," Adams said about Saturday's class. She said burlesque might be considered a dying art, but it's one that also seems fun, unique and empowering.

The class was a kickoff to Moose Jaw's V-day campaign, which aims to empower women and stop violence against women and girls. Karri Kuntz and Cynthia Wells organized the event.

Instructing the class was Saskatoon's Rosebud Burlesque Club Mistress Cheripop Purr, who guided female students through various burlesque techniques of playful teasing, which seemed quite innocent at the same time playing of feminine sexuality.
